West Orange, N.J., is a vibrant community with a rich history and diverse architecture. The town was founded in the early 18th century, and many of its original buildings still stand. At the time, it was the first planned residential community in the U.S.
 
Measuring at 12 acres, it’s a relatively small community made up of open land, parks, and beautiful homes. West Orange comprises four distinct neighborhoods, some of which have views of the New York City skyline. The town is known for its beauty, recreational opportunities, community feel, and location, as well as the home of inventor Thomas Edison.

West Orange is about 20 miles west of Manhattan. The town offers free Jitney service to the Orange, South Orange, and Mountain train stations. You also can drive to Harrison N.J. PATH train, which connects directly to Manhattan’s Financial District. West Orange is located right off I-280 and is minutes from I-24, I-78, the Garden State Parkway, the New Jersey Turnpike, and Newark Liberty International Airport.

When it comes to dining, West Orange has many quality restaurants. Julio’s is the perfect spot if you're in the mood for Italian. The dishes are made with fresh, seasonal ingredients, and the menu changes regularly to reflect what's currently in season. For a more casual dining experience, Chit Chat Diner is a great option. The food is classic American fare with a twist —  think burgers with gourmet toppings and hand-cut fries. 
 
If you're looking for more homemade Italian, Primavera Restaurant is one of the best places in town. The menu features modern Italian cuisine emphasizing organic, locally sourced ingredients. For those who love fried chicken, Sam's Place will become their favorite. No matter what your dining preferences are, West Orange has something to offer.

Things to Do

When it comes to finding things to do, West Orange has many options. Nature lovers will enjoy exploring the South Mountain Recreational Complex, which offers a variety of amenities, notably Turtle Back Zoo. South Mountain also includes a safari-themed mini-golf course, paddle boats, a playground, a 1.75-mile walking loop around a reservoir, and an adventure park. Another popular spot is McLoone's Boathouse, an area with a wonderful park, mini golf, a restaurant, and paddleboat rides on the reservoir.
 
History buffs enjoy the Thomas Edison Center, where you can learn about the famous inventor's life and work. And last but not least, the South Mountain Ice Arena is a great place to go skating or catch a hockey game. No matter your interests, you're sure to find something to do in West Orange.

West Orange Public Schools serves West Orange. The district operates seven elementary schools, three middle schools, and one high school. The district has a cutting-edge STEM program and some of the best athletic facilities in Essex County.
